The Puppies are Here!!

Isabella and Millicent had their puppies last week!

Millie had 6 puppies--5 males and 1 female--there is 1 white male, 1 flashy fawn male, 2 flashy brindle males, 1 flashy reverse brindle male and 1 dark reverse brindle female.

Izzy had 9 puppies and we lost 1. There are 3 white females, 2 fawn females and 3 fawn males. 1 fawn female has a white collar and 1 fawn male has a white collar.

Both litters have had their tails clipped and dew claws removed. Millie's litter will be ready to go to forever homes on Dec 21st and Izzy's on Dec 23rd. We can and will hold till Christmas eve if need--but have to be picked up by 3pm on the 24th.

Deposits are being accepted and you will choose your puppy in order of deposits placed. We have expressed interest in the white male, the fawn female with white collar, and the darker brindle boxers--but no deposits have been received.

Christmas Puppies

We will have 2 litters arriving early-mid November. Salvadore/Millicent and Salvadore/Isabella both have been bred successfully and will have puppies that will be ready for Christmas.

Pictures will be posted of each litter and available puppies will be showcased. They will come to you with full AKC registration, vet check, worming, tails and dew claws docked. We, personally, leave their ears natural. You can discuss with your vet if you desire your puppy's ears clipped. If you get your puppy after they are 8wks old, then they will have their 1st set of shots.

Deposits will be taken starting at 3wks old with deposits being accepted by check, money order, or paypal. Puppies can be held until Christmas eve for additional $25 charge if the puppy will be over 6 wks old.

Christmas eve puppies will be picked up before 3pm and will come with either a big red bow or a stocking, a bag of puppy food, collar, leash and chew toy.

Delivery can be arranged within 100mile radius for additional $50 charge or we can meet half-way for $25.

Most of our puppies have sold before they can go to their homes, with some being sold before being whelped. So, if you are interested in a particular puppy, a deposit is encouraged as soon as possible.

MYTH #1
White Boxers are rare.
FACT
Approximately 20 - 25% of all Boxers are born white. Some of the first foundation dogs for the Boxer breed were white.
As a matter of fact because of putting the label of "RARE" on these white boxers, unscrupulous breeders, backyard breeders and puppy farmers, may advertise them as such and add a hefty price tag!

MYTH #2
White Boxers develop more health problems and are sicker than other Boxers.
FACT
Because a Boxer is white does not mean that it is going to be unhealthy. No clinical evidence has been recorded showing the White Boxer at higher risk for health problems. Many whites are born without problems and stay trouble-free for the duration of their lives. In most ways the white Boxer isn't any different from any other Boxer. When problems do occur, they can occur in non-whites as well. It is difficult to find clear statistics about the white/nonwhite issue. White Boxer’s can be more prone to sunburn/stroke so more care may need to be afforded too them during long hot sunny spells.

MYTH #3
All White Boxers are deaf and are not trainable.
FACT
Although there is a higher incidence of deafness when a Boxer is white (approximately 18% of whites), not all are deaf. Deaf Boxers can be trained using a variety of methods including hand signals, sign language, flashlights and more. Training any Boxer, hearing or deaf, requires time, patience and understanding.

MYTH #4
White Boxers are "mean".
FACT
White Boxers are not "mean". Coat colour on a Boxer does not affect a Boxer's personality. White Boxers exhibit the same endearing personality traits as their darker counterparts.

MYTH #5
White Boxers are albinos.
FACT
White Boxers are not albinos. Albino dogs do not have any pigment. White Boxers are simply born with white hair.

MYTH #6
White Boxers cannot be registered.
FACT
White Boxers can be registered with the Kennel Club.They cannot be shown in the conformation ring however, they can partake in agility and obedience classes.

Disciplining Your Boxer Dog

The day you bring the Boxer puppy home, you must already have picked the direction in which you want to go with him.

Disciplining one is a matter of thinking and working a step ahead of your Boxer. Do it with love, gentleness but firmness as well.

Also, a Boxer that is well behaved today, may not remain so forever. A dog's behavior constantly changes; new problems can always develop and existing ones could get worse. So make the discipline constant.

Training your Boxer is the most important thing you will do for him; and for yourself, in order to have a much better relationship together.

A trained Boxer will listen and can safely be allowed freedom more than an untrained one.

A disciplined and well-trained Boxer is more confident and makes a wonderful companion that is smart, soulful, most people-oriented dog and blessed with boundless energy - a pleasure to live with.

A poorly trained dog can be a loud and destructive nuisance around the house that weighs on you more like a commitment and responsibility rather than a blessing.

Teach them young when the Boxers dont know any better rather than stressing them out when they are older and more difficult to control.

It is not fair on your Boxer to let him pull on the leash when he is a small puppy and it doesn't hurt your hand, then it is to scold and shout at him if he does the same when he is big and strong; and makes your arms feel like falling out of the joints. It is not fair on the dog and certainly not fair on you.

Start the training some place that is familiar to your Boxer, where there is minimum distraction.

But remember socialization is also an important part of the training because you don't want to end up with a very shy Boxer.

So after both of you are skilled at several obedience commands, start taking him to different areas for practice, where there are increasing amount of distractions present. Examples are near a supermarket, busy parking lot and a busy park on Sundays. This may seems like starting all over again but you'll have a superbly trained dog at the end of it. So it's worth the effort.

Keep in mind Boxers are intelligent. Being an intelligent dog has its own advantages and drawbacks.

They are quick to learn.

It also means Boxers have a mind of their own that can sometimes show up as stubbornness. Thus, they can be harder to train than most other dogs due to their sense of independence.

When you understand a boxer's intelligence/stubbornness, handle it well, and you can avoid problems in disciplining and training them.

As owners, you must maintain respect between you and your Boxers. Respect goes both ways.

Respect their intelligence. Love them. Set the rules for behavior. Trust them. There is no need for extreme measures to show Boxers that you are the top dog. Handle their hard-headedness with patience and don't give up on their training. And because they are stubborn, conventional obedience training may not be the most effective way to get them to listen to you.

Utilize their high play drive for more effective obedience training.

Conduct play training where by the training tasks are made into fun games and the Boxer's high play drive is used as motivation. There are a lot of really good books available on this type of training.

Basically Boxers are intelligent and could be stubborn. So you have to outwit them!

While training your Boxer, you have to make him WANT to do what you want him to. You can't make him do stuff unless it is FUN. Otherwise you are wasting both your time and his.

Boxers LOVE to play! You will have the happiest Boxer in the world and most obedient if you will just spend some time, giving them your undivided attention everyday. Otherwise they feel ignored, bored and will tear or chew things up and will not listen to you.

Some tried and proven tactics you can use to make your Boxers listen to you more:

*When playing with your Boxer puppy, play at his level.

If play is encouraged at ground level, this builds your role as the dominant or top dog when you are standing and training your puppy. If the puppy is allowed to jump up and initiate play, then this can lead to unwanted jumping up as the Boxer gets older.

*From the very beginning, make sure your Boxers know you are the master.

However, it suffice to teach your Boxer to obey simple commands of raising a paw in a handshake, giving a hand lick for a kiss or doing a roll over to show his submission to you. Most Boxers love performing these simple tricks (obedience commands) for you.

There is no need for extreme measures to prove you are the boss. Obedience training should be fun and rewarding for you and your Boxer.

Once it is established you are the boss, one owner declared: Life with your Boxer will be just kidney bean dancin all the way! Another reported: My Boxer wanted to be class clown at obedience class until I got serious and showed him I was the boss.

*The Boxer must always eat after you do.

This is the easiest way to show to your Boxer who is the boss. But this is easier said than done when there are many people in the family and not all would respect the rule.

*Very active young Boxers have short attention span.

It is best to have many short 5 to 10-minute lessons than a single, long 30-minute lesson. Keep the training session short and sweet. Lengthy session easily becomes dull, boring and tedious for both you and the Boxer.

*Start the training at quiet places familiar to your Boxer with very few things and people around to distract him.

Gradually move the training to places with more and more distractions so he will learn to obey your commands despite the distractions.

*Speak to your Boxer strongly but not in an angry voice.

Be kind but be firm while training and never give in to what they want. It seems cruel but in the long run you will have a much better relationship with you boxer.

*Celebrate after every training session for a good job done.

Have a big play by running and throwing his favorite toys. If you give them a lot of playtime with yourself theyd listen to you more.

*Use only one word like sit, down, drop and stay when teaching Boxers commands.

For example, when your Boxer gets on the lounge with you, say sit - down and he should sit then lay down on your lap.

*To keep a Boxer from charging the front door, put up a door/gate that he cant see through or hop over.

Have him wait till people enter and come up the stairs then he gets a treat. This particular owner noticed that even when the gate is left open the Boxers don't usually go by unless they see a squirrel or cat!

*Finally, no matter how well trained you think your Boxer is, he has an attention span of seconds!

Dont let him run away because he'll just keep going and going. Always keep him leashed outdoors if not in a fenced area. He can run faster than you and you will not catch him if he runs for the road!

Boxers and Obedience Class
Discipline is one of the most important aspects of owning a Boxer.

Puppy school is not an option, it is a necessity to train owners, including children in the family, how to manage the Boxer and nurture it into becoming a well-adjusted member of the family.

Puppy school is for the Boxers to help develop good habits right from the start. Wait until your Boxer is at least 6 months old before putting him through any serious work.

Trainers with extensive experience and knowledge can deal with just about any behavior problems your pup might come up with.

Choose a trainer who is purposeful and patient. The well-trained Boxer is a sight to behold going through his paces in the class. Their innate intelligence makes many Boxers great successes in the obedience ring.

Of more importance is for you as owner to continue to practice the obedience lessons with your Boxers.

They will best remember the lessons when you incorporate them into your everyday routines with your dog.

For example you can tell your pup to heel while he follows you around the house, and to sit and stay while you prepare his dinner. As your wake up greeting in the morning he can do a roll over. Tell him to go find the ball while you get dressed and go get the leash before you go for walks together.

Of Leash, Harness and Crate

This is worth repeating. Your Boxer should not be allowed to run loose outdoors. He has short attention span and runs faster than you.

Though extremely tolerant of children by nature, a Boxers effusive greeting could scare a small child. He could run into not so pleasant encounters with other dogs from the neighborhood or worse mishaps like road accident and poisoned stuff.

So exercise or play with your Boxer in a fenced area or on a leash.

If yours like to pull or stray while going on walks, opt for a body harness. The chain-harness combo looks good as well as trains the Boxer to walk without pulling or straying.

A harness is also the answer to the Boxer slipping out of the collar. And a properly protected screen door is the answer to one that is prone to unexpected house exit.

At home, a crate for your Boxer puppy can be his safe heaven, a place where he retreats to for rest.

It is not a prison. Place it in a warm corner, away from the draft, cold or summer heat, as Boxers are sensitive to extremes in temperature. Leave the crate door open and your puppy will usually enter when he wants to rest.

The crate is particularly useful when you are going out, leaving him alone for a while. Then you dont have to worry so much about your Boxer chewing up the furniture or electrical cords in the house. The crate is also an excellent housetraining aid, as the puppy doesnt like to soil his crate.

Why A Boxer??

According to Matthew Cowley, in his article, "Canine Clowns," a boxer is all that is good in a dog. He is "a laugh a minute, lives life to the fullest, a maximum velocity version of canine slapstick. But he is also a sympathetic soul, a shoulder to cry on, a confidante."

Indeed, boxers are friendly outgoing people dogs. They can become so happy that their whole pelvis moves when they wag their tails. Popular in the United States since the 1940s, the boxer is a wonderful family dog who got his name from his habit of beginning a fight by standing on his hind legs and boxing with his front paws.

History and Origin

Several theories exist regarding the origin of the boxer.

One theory, from the 1800s, maintains that the boxer was developed in Germany as a cross between the mastiff-type bullenbeisser and English bulldog. One of these first boxers was the pure white "Blanka." Considered an instrumental dog in the development of the breed, Blanka gave birth to a litter of puppies. One of her daughters, "Meta von der Passage" became an important member of the boxer pedigree. It is thought that nearly all boxers can be traced back to Meta.

Another theory is not so precise. It claims that the boxer is a much older breed, developed from fighting dogs of Tibet.

Regardless of their origin, boxers are working dogs and was one of the first breeds in Germany to be trained as police dogs. They were also used in the previously popular sport of dog fighting. Their courage and bravery led them to be used to run messages on the battlefields during World War I and World War II.

First registered with the AKC in 1904, the boxer did not become popular with American families until the 1940s.

Appearance and Size

The boxer is a medium sized, square built dog with a noble appearance. He combines strength and agility with elegance and style. The breed has a short back, strong limbs and a short square muzzle with a protruding lower jaw and facial wrinkles. His well developed muscles are hard and appear smooth under taut skin. Most boxers in the United States have docked tails and cropped ears but in some countries, these cosmetic procedures are outlawed (one or both practices).

The hair coat is short, shiny and lies smooth and tight to the body. It can be brindle, fawn or brown, with or without white markings. Completely white boxers are not common since breeders typically cull them due to their high risk of deafness.

The adult boxer stands 21 to 25 inches at the shoulder and weighs 65 to 70 pounds.

Personality

The boxer is the ultimate people dog. He is deliberate and wary with strangers but curious, and he will exhibit fearless courage if threatened. Boxers can adapt to nearly any environment, as long as they are with people.

Boxers are very intelligent but can be boisterous. For that reason, obedience training is a must. The breed enjoys training and learns easily. Some have worked as guide dogs as well as guard dogs.

Home and Family Relations

The boxer is a friendly breed, devoted to his family. His temperament is fundamentally playful, yet he is patient and stoical with children. He is tolerant of their antics and loves to play. He is a natural protector and, if trained, can be a good watch and guard dog. Without training, some boxers tend to be too friendly and would rather lick and play with an intruder instead of guarding.

Special Concerns

Boxers are low maintenance but they require consistent exercise. Their short hair coat requires minimal grooming. Though they are excellent family pets, they tend to fight among themselves, especially if the other family boxers are the same sex. The most significant concern regarding the boxer is the high rate of cancer compared to other breeds.

Common Diseases and Disorders

# Boxer Cardiomyopathy - is an electrical disorder of the heart that causes arrhythmias (ventricular premature contractions). Dogs may present syncope, weakness and congestive heart failure.

# Gastric torsion, also known as bloat, is a life-threatening sudden illness associated with the stomach filling with air and twisting.

# Epilepsy is a seizure disorder that develops between the ages of 2 to 5 years.

# Intervertebral Disk Disease is a disorder that affects the spinal disks resulting in pain, difficulty walking and possibly paralysis.

# Dilated cardiomyopathy is a serious heart condition that results in a large, thin walled heart muscle.

# Atrial Septal Defect - is a congenital defect of the atrial septum of the heart

# Aortic Stenosis – this disease is caused by stenosis of the aorta and causing symptoms such as weakness, collapse and sudden death.

# Sick Sinus Syndrome - is a disease that causes a dysrhythmia of the heart.

# Interdigital Dermatitis, also known as pododermatitis, is an inflammation of the paws involving the feet and nails.

# Mast Cell Tumors are malignant tumors than can occur in the skin or within the body.

# Drug Reaction to Acepromazine may lower the blood pressure and cause arrhythmias of the heart. Acepromazine should not be used in the boxer breed.

In addition, although these occur infrequently, the following disorders have also been reported:

# Hyperadrenocorticism is a disorder affecting the adrenal glands. When overactive, the adrenal glands secrete excessive cortisol, resulting in illness.

# Cryptorchidism is a condition in which one or both testicles do not descend into the scrotum.

# Hypothyroidism results when the thyroid gland does not function adequately. Without- enough thyroid hormone, illness can occur.

# Degenerative myelopathy is a progressive degenerative disease of the spinal cord that slowly results in weakness and eventually inability to use the rear legs.

# Progressive axonopathy - is a debilitating nervous system disease, which thanks to diligent boxer breeders, is now uncommon.

# Prolapse of the third eyelid also known as cherry eye, is not painful and occurs spontaneously.

# Entropion is a problem with the eyelid that causes inward rolling. Lashes on the edge of the eyelid irritate the surface of the eyeball and may lead to more serious problems.

# Ectropion is a problem with the eyelid that causes eversion of the eyelid margin. It most commonly affects the lower central eyelid.

# Melanoma is a tumor arising from melanocytes, which are the cells that produce pigment.

# Cutaneous Histiocytoma - is a benign tumor of the skin that can affect young dogs.

# Vaginal Hyperplasia an exaggerated response of the vaginal tissue to estrogen during certain phases of the heat cycle. The vaginal tissue becomes swollen and may protrude through the vulva.

# Insulinoma is a malignant tumor of the pancreas that secretes excessive amounts of insulin leading to hypoglycemia.

# Food Allergy can occur in some pets. Affected pets develop skin lesions secondary to some food ingredients.

# Pyloric Stenosis - is a congenital hypertrophy of the pyloric muscle which can cause vomiting and obstruction.

# Colitis is an inflammation of the colon causing intermittent diarrhea.

The boxer is prone to various tumors and malignancies, demodicosis, atopy, acne, deafness and urinary incontinence.

Life Span

The life span of the boxer is 9 to 11 years.
